The Art of the Student Job Hunt in 2020

How on Earth do I balance a part-time job with a full-time degree? It’s a question most students are forced to ask themselves at some stage of their university career.

As I’ve found over the last two years or so, it isn’t cheap being a student – especially in a city like London. Travelling in and out of Uni every day, making sure your rent gets paid, keeping food in the fridge – it all adds up. Whilst student finance is very helpful, it doesn’t cover all of your costs, which is why I suspect many of you are now looking to earn a little bit of money on the side of your studies. Rest assured, you’ve come to the right place.

I know from experience that the last thing you want to be doing when you’ve got an essay deadline looming, is to be running around the streets of London handing CVs over to anyone who’ll take them. Not only do CVs and cover letters take an age to write, but there’s no guarantee anyone will even take the time to read them, let alone call you up for an interview. When you’ve got six case studies to read, four essays to write and a meeting with your dissertation supervisor to attend, time isn’t something you tend to have an abundance of! Why then do we waste precious hours going from door to door, only to be told, “Oh sorry, the manager’s not here at the moment”, or, “Thanks very much for your interest but you need to apply online”.

Thankfully if you’re reading this, your CV delivery days are a thing of the past (finally), as you’ve now discovered ‘gigl’. You can now apply for hundreds of local part-time jobs with flexible hours, in just a fraction of the time it would have taken the old you to collect your CVs from the printer! Simply find a job that you like the look of and record a 60 second video telling your future employer why you’d make a great addition to their team. That video will get sent directly to their phone, so there’s no chance of your application getting lost among a pile of paperwork. That’s right – no CVs, no train fares, no time wasted.

The app is completely free to use, so be sure to have a browse and see if there’s anything that tickles your fancy.

Welcome to 2020. Welcome to gigl
